Fortunately, the days of bulky and obvious dentures are long gone. Today, these restorations are custom-made for each patient from dental materials that don’t compromise on durability or appearance. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they don’t require any care. With this in mind, keep reading for five helpful tips on how to take care of your dentures!

Tip #1: Brush Your Dentures Each Morning and Evening

Like your natural teeth, plaque, bacteria, and food particles can cling to your dentures. That’s why it’s so important that you brush them each morning and evening with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to avoid using products with harsh chemicals, like bleach, since they can damage your restoration and contain toxins that are not safe to ingest.

Tip #2: Clean Your Dentures Over a Sink Filled with Water

The last thing you want is for your dentures to crack or, worse, shatter into several pieces. To help prevent that from happening, clean your dentures over a sink filled with water. Of course, you can also place a soft towel down on the counter to cushion the fall.

Tip #3: Take Your Dentures Out When You Sleep

Although it’s possible to sleep with dentures, it’s not recommended. After all, your gums need some time to rest. Plus, nighttime is the perfect opportunity to give your restoration a deeper clean. Simply place them in a glass of a dentist-recommended denture cleaner overnight, and they’ll be fresh and ready-to-go by morning!

Tip #4: Call Your Dentist If Your Denture Breaks

If your denture breaks, do NOT try to use superglue or an at-home denture repair kit to remedy the situation. Instead, call your dentist ASAP to schedule an appointment. After examining your restoration, they can determine if the damage is minor enough that it can be fixed at their office or if it’s severe enough that a new one needs to be made.

Tip #5: Schedule Biannual Dental Checkups and Cleanings

Even if you don’t have any of your natural teeth left, you need to visit your dentist twice a year. These appointments allow your dental team to assess the condition of your gums, conduct an oral cancer screening, and make sure that your dentures fit properly.
